When I talk about our children’s bathroom or bathroom remodel, people always ask about the cost. And it makes sense. If you are considering such a project in your home, knowing how much you need to save in advance is a very smart move. But before we get into the line items for specific locations, let’s talk about your typical home, because I think that will give some insight into our investment options.

When we bought our house in the spring of 2019, we bought below our budget, knowing full well that we would spend a lot of money to make it our own. It was an old and shabby house in a very nice neighborhood in Chicago, where many houses were selling for two or three times the price of our house.

About a year ago I had a contractor come to look at a vacant lot and give me a job estimate. He was able to give me a very rough estimate of the labor portion of the project, knowing that we would tighten that figure even more once he was ready to review my design plans. It was helpful to have a rough idea of labor costs like space, hardware etc. I was able to research many other items beforehand.
I will add that it is always a good idea to budget for the unexpected. I would say you should add at least 10-20% of the total budget to the overall maintenance of the project. You never know what’s going to happen when you open the walls, and it’s best to be prepared for the worst. But we always hope for the best! A $25,000 steel beam kept us out of larger projects.

My contractor did both our children’s bath and master bath at the same time. So he gave me a big estimate of work in two places. Hence the cost of renovating two bathrooms. I also bought all the equipment for each space at the same time, so sometimes they are combined.
Part of my job is working with brands I love, but we paid for most of these baths out of our own pockets. We are always renovating so we can stay within our budget and then it is a nice bonus if some items are donated through the partnership. If an item is recommended by a partner, I’ve added a star.
Even finding this figure is scary. But at the end of the day, some think it’s that much money and some think it’s not that much. Investing in our home is one of our favorite ways to spend our hard-earned dollars, and I think it pays to take a realistic look at the real numbers.
