Our original kitchen, built in 1992, has an oak design and some stainless steel appliances added by the previous owners. Over the years, we’ve completed many budget-friendly DIY kitchen projects.
From adding a glass tile backsplash to some new appliances, there are small innovations and improvements over time. The first time we painted the kitchen cabinets white was very different.
We actually bought our house when oak was all the rage and beige was a great color choice 8 years ago. We always love our favorite hat color, but our styles and tastes have evolved. The good news for us is that we can update our kitchen with budget-friendly DIY projects.
Budget Kitchen Refresh By Fresh Is Real
Today we are trying to find timeless options when choosing our interior design. However, we don’t want to add anything new to this kitchen unless it’s necessary.
You can paint walls, cabinets, and even your tile backsplash to transform a kitchen into your current aesthetic. A fresh coat of paint can make a big difference. We originally planned to repaint the original cabinets, but once we started doing that, we realized they all needed a new coat or two of paint.
Paint, close the doors or empty the kitchen, your wardrobe is a great starting point for designing the kitchen of your dreams. The good news is that if it doesn’t suit your style, you don’t have to paint it.
For example, in this small kitchen, our friends created a modern concept without painting the oak cabinets! We love the new touches like the new black paint and updated faucet.
Before And After Kitchen Makeovers To Inspire Your Own Renovation
Our oak cabinets had seen better days, so we decided to paint them rather than replace them. Painting them is our best and most effective option.
For reference, our kitchen has 12 upper cabinets with doors, an island with three drawers and two cabinets, and 11 base cabinet doors and 12 drawers. Our kitchen area is 12′ x 14′ = 168 square feet.
The upper rooms are about 40 square meters and the lower rooms are about 3.5 square meters. 43.5 square feet of actual closet space.
So based on the painting numbers above, we estimate that painting our kitchen will cost $2,800.
Budget Modern Kitchen Remodel Plan
About $150 for paint and accessories. Please let us know what color and what is left. It’s safe to say that painting our kitchen doesn’t just cost hundreds of dollars.
The $150 or so spent on paint and supplies (new carpet, Frog tape, deglosser, brush) not only need to paint the cabinets, but also the backsplash tiles.
We compared different white lacquers and settled on the clear, pure shade, Esmeralda. We didn’t want our background to contrast with the current white. Be sure to test your paint color in different lighting conditions and compare it to your current paint color on trim and other accessories.
According to Sherwin Williams, one gallon of paint should cover about 100 square feet. And with the calculations above, it makes perfect sense that I have more than half a gallon of paint left. There is some green left because I had to paint the outside of the island and I didn’t include that in my painting calculations.
Kitchen Makeovers With Before And After Photos
We chose a large French door refrigerator that served our family well. Now we can store and catch our food. Not to mention, we’ve had a version of this LG refrigerator for over 10 years and it still works great!
You’d be surprised how much dust collects on the handles, hinges, and edges of your cabinets. Don’t forget to clean the tops of cabinets and appliances as well. Starting from scratch makes a big difference, even if you don’t do a complete teardown.
The furniture may be small, but buy more handles and knobs, or consider updating your furniture to match your new style.
If you’re looking for beautiful countertops but are on a tight budget, you can use things that combine like a kitchen island with a stone exterior to save money.
