Shannon Smith: Start with the main pieces. You will need at least a place to sit and a place to sleep. If you’re not sure what direction you want to go with your space scheme, stick with a neutral color palette to start. Try to think about how you want the space to be: do you want a beautiful expression of your personality or do you want a quiet and peaceful place to come home from work? Once you have an idea of ​​these things, you’re good to go! Choose large anchors first and build around them slowly, adding texture and color as you see fit.

SS: Something and a pillow. There are tons of great stores for affordable decor (like HomeGoods), and there are endless Etsy shops selling cute pillow covers. Just be sure to invest in down-filling materials, and your pillows will be even better!

SW: Perhaps the hardest part is the comparison between the small budget and the fact that it is a rental property. In a perfect world, I would paint the wood trim on the door, and change out the home decor for something bold and fun. I think I’m happy with how we went and added text and space without adding color, and it still felt comfortable and luxurious.

SS: HomeGoods obviously. Etsy for vintage finds and unique art prints. One Kings Lane is a good bet for furniture (again, Joss & Main is for cheap pieces, too). Search Craigslist, Krrb and Chairish for unique steals if you’re looking for a great deal!

Susan: I’m a firm believer that you don’t need a lot to decorate your space. If you think about these three things – text, color, and number – you can make any space beautiful.
