Furniture Arrangement Ideas For Small Living Room
The living room is truly the heart of any home – and a beautifully decorated room can change the look and feel of your entire home. But when you’re dealing with a small living room, it’s hard to create the perfect layout. You need to figure out how to fit all your furniture into the space while still leaving room to move and spread out. If your living room has little square footage, it doesn’t have to lack style.
Long Living Room Ideas
To get some inspiration for decorating your small living room, we asked three interior designers to give us their favorite living room layout ideas for small spaces.
Layout: This layout is perfect for a very unique living room where you have to walk through the middle of the room to get to the adjoining room. It has a small section on the wall opposite the TV with room for a single side chair diagonally from the chaise longue and a small coffee table.
The couch: It may seem counterintuitive, but in a very small space, says Gorsline, cross-sections can be king. “[A couch with a chaise longue] gives you the ability to relax without taking up a large footprint.” Just take into account the length of the sofa you choose and make sure there is extra space on each side of the sofa.
Plus: If you’re worried about visually taking up too much space with cross-sections, Gorsline says to consider curved or rounded furniture. “They can still function while visually and physically taking up less space,” he says.
Small Living Room Ideas That Make A Big Impact
If you don’t have room for a side table, consider a C table above the armrest of your sofa.
Layout: Arranging your furniture in a small open living room can be challenging. Here, two side chairs sit on either side of the sofa to create an imaginary wall behind the chairs. It helps demarcate the space from the dining room or kitchen behind it, but still feels open and airy.
Sofa: In this classic layout, the sofa is king and serves as the focal point of the room. It is placed directly opposite the fireplace or TV cabinet.
Plus: “The key to getting this layout right is scale and making sure your furniture has some room to breathe on all sides,” says Gorsline. While it can work in some small spaces to leave some space around the furniture, in this space you should choose an empty space around each piece.
Living Room Furniture Layout Ideas To Keep The Balance
Layout: not all living rooms revolve around a fireplace or TV unit. If you want your bookcase to be the focal point of the living room, place the sofa perpendicular to the built-in or freestanding bookcase. Then place two armchairs directly opposite each other, facing the couch.
Sofa: Since the sofa is off to the side in this layout, you may want to try larger pieces. “Large pieces in softer colors mixed with a mix of white and acrylic accent pieces will help make a room appear larger than it really is,” explains Fenimore.
Extra: Since your bookshelves are the focal point of the room, consider wallpapering behind your shelves to add a touch of pattern. “It will also help with styling, as the wallpaper helps to visually fill in the shelves and prevent them from looking too classy,” says Fenimore.
Layout: in this classic living room layout, the fireplace really takes center stage. In this formal layout, you don’t have to point the furniture towards the TV, which makes the fireplace more prominent. The sofa is backed up against the fireplace and faces directly in front of the two chairs.
Small Yet Super Cozy Living Room Designs
Sofa: Choose a sofa that is large enough to fill the room without being too loud. Be careful of empty spaces on both sides, especially if you need to move to another room nearby.
Extra: Remember that you want to do your best not to distract from the focal point of the fireplace. Fenimore suggests an acrylic coffee table because it’s “the perfect piece for a narrow living room like this because it doesn’t visually block your view of the fireplace.”
Layout: “Sometimes you’re not only working with space constraints, but with an odd layout—I find this is most common in historic homes,” explains Murray. To solve this problem, focus on furniture that is scaled appropriately for the room—you might want to choose an 80-inch sofa instead of a 112-inch chair or ditch that second accent chair.
Sofa: If you don’t have the space for a full-sized sofa, consider a deep ottoman. If you don’t entertain a lot, you can get an upholstered chair with the same charm that won’t overwhelm a small space.

The advantage: Don’t be afraid to place a chair in front of a window, as long as you leave enough space on all sides to let in the light. Floating furniture also works in small, awkward spaces, but choose pieces with modern simple edges that can stand on their own.
Layout: In a very small living room (we’re talking room size), Murray says, “I try not to do too much.” Keep it simple and ditch the side seats. Focus on a comfortable sofa that matches the space and add a comfortable, large ottoman for extra seating when guests come over.
Bank: here you have to spend at the bank. Since it will be your only piece of furniture in this small space, make sure you choose a sofa that has a lot of personality to act as the focal point of the room.
Plus: “To bring a nice layer into the room, I choose a rug that’s close to the parameter dimensions,” says Murray. The texture and color of the upholstery can make a cozy room feel larger than it is.
