Guess how many times I sat on the porch and didn’t get bitten by a mosquito, something spilled on the floor or a dog broke through the screen to attack a squirrel?

When we bought our 1960s Garrison Colonial with an extra covered porch, I dreamed of creating the perfect outdoor room.
But we all know that life often verifies our decorating dreams, so for about a year my little porch looked like this:
Last summer I beautified a small, foil-covered porch, dusted the patio furniture and cushions in our first home, added a rug, bought some home accessories, and made a quick botanical wreath.
I knew then that the porch decoration I had mounted on a piece of canvas was a temporary solution.

My husband is the chef in the family and grills almost every night of the year. Having a gas grill on your furnished porch is perfect when you want to cook during a blizzard or heavy rain.
It took a while but my husband finally agreed to move the grill outside which required leveling out part of the patio and creating a small patio the size of a grill.

With the grill out of the way and on a tight budget to buy new porch furniture, I peeked into the adjoining dining room for inspiration.
Gorgeous And Inviting Farmhouse Style Porch Decorating Ideas
My goal was to create a better design flow between the dining area and the porch, which are connected by sliding doors.
The easiest way to find decorating inspiration and create cohesion between rooms is to choose your favorite element of the room and use it as a building block.
Our dining room rug is full of rich, vibrant colors including blue (constant throughout the house) and bold pink, so I challenged myself to create a complete outdoor space on a budget.
Last year I wrote about cost-effective ways to decorate a small porch, so I took my own advice and implemented four of these ideas (so far).

My husband replaced his old rusty ceiling lamp with a much better version for about $50 (not mine anymore, but similar) to freshen up the room instantly.
Inexpensive string lights attached to little control hooks provide extra light and a lovely atmosphere when eating out (bonus: kids love it).
I sold my old outdoor furniture and bought cheap stackable garden chairs and a smaller table from Target, and with the grill removed there is room for a small couch.
Macrame is largely from the 1970s, and this macrame hanger adds a lovely texture while keeping the green out of the way. Plus it’s a steal for only $10!

See that little tray on the side table? It’s actually a pack of Melissa & Doug toys! A quick shot of turquoise spray paint turned it into a colorful addition to the porch.
The metal wall art has been in our basement for years and I originally bought it on Pier 1 to hang in our first apartment over a decade ago. Now they are finally looking at the porch house!
The indoor/outdoor blue carpet was in our dining room but our dog pooped several times! I almost threw it away but the pressure washer cleaned it completely and now it’s like new!
This change has not yet been finalized. Ultimately, I would like to paint the floor and doors, replace the door elements and add ceiling trim.

Now I’m going to make a watermelon mojito. Please pray that I am alone for a few minutes to enjoy my porch.

When we first moved into our house years ago, my parents kept talking about how great the porch screen was. And while I loved it, I really didn’t understand why they thought it was so amazing.
How To Create The Small Front Porch Of Your Dreams
Well, now I understand. Do you want to enjoy the fresh air and the sun with a roof over your head and without insects? It’s a big win.
Sheds are much better protected from the weather than a patio or deck, so you have more flexibility when it comes to decorating. Which means you can create a cozier patio complete with artwork, accessories and cushions.
But the porch porch is not exactly the same as the inner room. Even if they are better protected, items on a reserved balcony will still be exposed to moisture, temperature fluctuations, pollen and dirt. So you need to be more careful with the materials you use.
For a large, beautiful screened-in porch, I thought a lot about how to decorate the screened-in porch to make it cozy and beautiful while also making sure it was sturdy enough to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at it.
How To Plan And Design The Screen Porch Of Your Dreams

Before you really get into all the decorating details, you need to think about how you’re going to use your porch.
How you plan to use your space will help determine the best layout and type of furniture to use.
Small Deck Ideas To Maximize Your Outdoor Living Space
If you want to create an outdoor dining area, a large dining table is essential. If you plan to send your children to play, make sure you leave plenty of room for them to play. And if you can’t wait to play with a good book during the next rain, make sure you have a comfortable spot, be it a hammock, couch or armchair.
We have a very long balcony so I divided it into three separate areas – a dining area with a dining table, a living area with a sofa overlooking 2 chairs and a seating area with a sofa bed.
There are many different ways to get great balcony living room furniture. The easiest way is to buy garden furniture. You can trust your outdoor furniture to withstand the elements, and there are plenty of great options, from sofa sets to rocking chairs and egg-shaped chairs.
Of course, the downside of traditional outdoor furniture is that it is very expensive and can often ruin the overall look.
Amazing Front Porch Decorating Ideas To Make Pretty Entryway
One of my favorite ways to really increase the furniture potential of a covered porch is to use indoor furniture.
While indoor furniture is not suitable for a patio or deck that is completely exposed to the weather, a screened porch provides enough protection from the harsh sun and heavy rain, so indoor furniture often works well!
You want to choose furniture carefully – look for wooden or metal furniture that is well made and durable. (Upholstered indoor furniture is probably not the best choice for outdoors, even on a porch.)
Once you’ve chosen your furniture, you need to make sure it’s well sealed to protect it from the elements. I have a post that goes into all the details on how to make indoor furniture safe for outdoor use if you want more details.
Festive Fall Porch Ideas You’ll Want To Copy Asap
I have used benches, tables, chairs and cupboards designed for use in porch rooms that have been tested over the years and all hold up well.
