I sold all the appliances in the kitchen and cleaned out the cupboards. I took the cabinets very carefully because I wanted to turn them into a breakfast bench. I also removed four layers of flooring. They need to be low enough so they don’t interfere with the laminate thresholds I set up. Since I was going to reconfigure the entire kitchen, I also removed the sink and the tables.

There was a door leading from the kitchen that I decided to remove. I was able to successfully remove it and increase the size of the kitchen. By removing this door, I gained more wall space for cabinets and a refrigerator.

I also removed the popcorn ceilings by scratching the texture. Then I applied a texture from modern masters over it. It gave it that handmade plaster look that I love!

The first project I did was to turn those upper cabinets into a banquette. I completely redid them and changed them to fit the L shape. I think this riser provides hidden storage and attractive seating in the corner of this room, which works well.

Then I painted the walls and proceeded to repaint and refinish the cabinet. It took a while because I had to remove all the old paint, remove the trim and sand the bare wood. I redid the cabinets I had and added a prefab 36 inch cabinet that was adjusted to match the rest. I also built a special pan rack where this strange place lives. The hardware is called Facette Pull by Belwith Keeler and it totally made this kitchen look!

Top Tips For A Diy, Budget Kitchen Makeover

Once the cabinets were in, I could lay the floor. The waterproof laminate flooring we chose was Mohawk RevWood Select in Fawn Chestnut. DIY installation of this product was easy due to its click style. At this point the kitchen was starting to come together, but I still had ideas!

Next, I installed a floating shelf with hidden brackets behind the drywall. I cut off the plaster and put the brackets in turn on the gaps. Then I patched it and then made the shelves from a quarter inch sheet of cabinet grade maple plywood.

For the counters in this small kitchen remodel, I worked with diyconcrete.com to make concrete counters. You make molds from foam rails attached to melamine sheets, pour custom concrete into the molds, and then turn them onto stone-like cabinets. I covered them with MicroTek concrete coating which gave the entire backsplash and counter a concrete look. The color and textured look gives the kitchen a lot of movement.

After finishing the concrete counters, I put the callus in place. This hole was originally a living room bookcase that stayed in the house. I cut it to fit in the kitchen and cut a hole for an outlet. I added a trim to the corner to make it look more natural and it came out great!

Once my build was complete, I proceeded to install everything to make it a functional kitchen. I installed a sink and faucet to better protect the concrete counters. I also installed the hood with the help of my electrician. Then I installed lights above the floating shelves to give the kitchen a gallery feel. The most recent DIY project was to renovate my old refrigerator. I patched the holes where the old handles were and filled the holes with JB Weld Steelstik. I removed the logo and the handles on the cooler to make it look newer. I sandblasted the entire fridge and painted it with this urethane enamel paint from Behr, which is actually designed for metal.

Cosmo Appliances also sent us a nice dual fuel range that works great. It has an electric oven and a powerful gas stove that makes cooking nice and easy. Cosmo also sponsored a super functional little toaster oven that fits perfectly in the slot. It can do it all – convection, grill, pizza, grill, even air fry and dehydrate!

I love how this DIY small kitchen makeover turned out! It took months to complete this process, but it was worth it! I hope you will watch the video to better understand all the work that went into this space and what it used to look like. What do you think of the final result?
