In response to changes in consumer attitudes since the initial lockdowns due to COVID-19, think tanks and trade organizations are researching and predicting how homeowners want to live post-pandemic. As people spend more time at home, needs and wants have transformed, and kitchen and bathroom designers are paying attention.

One trend that has emerged from the pandemic is the growing interest in large wardrobes. Cooking and storing extra food at home became essential during the pandemic, and the trend continues.

But kitchen designers say that while Instagram-worthy cabinets with rows of cork-lidded spice jars and drugstores stocked with dog treats have become mainstream, the cabinet as a kitchen appliance predates COVID. And this type of cabinet promises to be a real trend ahead.
At a recent kitchen design conference, the National Kitchen and Bath Association defined the most luxurious cabinets as either parking for dry goods and kitchen supplies or a large floor-to-ceiling space for dry goods only. But veteran kitchen designers like Sarah Robertson and Heather Hingling say ready-made or “dirty” kitchens are on their way to replacing traditional cabinets.
“Main Street prep kitchens capture the concept of convenience,” says Hingling, an Atlanta, GA-based kitchen designer and influential blogger. “Builders are already offering plans for homes with these extra workspaces.”
She finds it amazing how she has come to the point of needing an auxiliary kitchen. “We’ve been looking at open floor plans for a long time,” he explains. “On every home improvement TV show, the designer knocks down walls in the main living space to create open floor plans. In addition, homeowners wanted to increase the number of windows in their kitchens, which necessarily led to a lack of storage space and convenience.

Hingling continues, “We were happy to accept these compromises as part of getting a kitchen we could live in until we realized we had nowhere to put the toaster. We also often feel the need to always have our kitchen fully exposed. The solution to this dilemma is a prep room. This allows us to open up and style our main kitchen while giving us extra work/storage space that isn’t visible.
“Whether it’s a coffee shop, a home bar or a secondary kitchen/bar, people love it because it allows the main kitchen to be designed as a more luxurious living space,” he notes.

A design Robertson created for a client is a good example of how cabinetry evolves. The client wanted a storage area near the kitchen for small appliances. a coffee shop that included a small refrigerator, sink and cold brew faucets. Children’s snack bar and room for children’s art supplies and of course food store. The main goal was a closet where clutter could stay but be open and accessible.

The design did it all, but was very creative. For example, the 11′ ceiling needed a ladder that could wrap around the room, and the cafeteria needed a cold beer tap because the customer liked a certain brand of ice cold beer and served it in a small keg. Delivered at home. Robertson used knowledge from a New York coffee shop to move a cold beer tap from the basement to an unused corner of the cabinet. The children’s corner was designed with a low drawer for granola bars, nuts and other snacks. Open shelves and bins are used to store items such as chips and popcorn. The “outer” part of the cabinet holds the children’s art supplies.
“That’s the real luxury,” Robertson said. “It’s not just anticipating the client’s needs, but adapting the design to meet those needs and providing special spaces where everything is contained and organized when our lives get out of hand.”

Kitchen Storage Ideas That Make It Impossible To Be Disorganized
Peter Dean, Director of Denny’s, Inc. In Stamford, CT designed two cabinets for discerning homeowners. One, called the butler’s pantry, houses floor-to-ceiling cupboards and staples and overflowing kitchen items, while the other is a pantry just off the dining room. Chain stores, silverware and other items for elegant hospitality. The dining room is particularly well-kept, with blue-grey cabinets, decorative tapestries and luxurious accessories.
Valerie Corsaro and Alyson O’Hanlon decided to show how a butler can look in their showroom at the Clive Christian Furniture New Jersey showroom in Tenafly, New Jersey. They chose glossy black cabinets, a decor-inspired glass mosaic wall from Artistic Tile, and light marble countertops and floors. A generous home bar is included. It is designed as a self-service bar with glass and bottle shelves. The backsplash is a gold leaf mirror by Antique Glass and detailed wallpaper by Pierre Frey. The butler’s pantry includes a built-in refrigerator, freezer drawers equipped with an ice maker and, of course, plenty of room for ice buckets, serving pieces and bottles.
Designer Jere Bowden believes in the idea of two kitchens. Here, a long hallway connects the chef’s kitchen and large pantry/storage/bar. The bar area has slatted cabinets that indicate this is a furniture-inspired space rather than part of a working kitchen. Treasures from the homeowner’s world travels are found throughout this space, including the entrance to the chef’s kitchen, which is accented by a sculpture. Colorful carpets and rugs are used in the kitchen and dining room.
As Hingling points out on his blog, the chamber room was historically a room on the ground floor of a mansion where china and silverware were stored. Because it contained valuables, it was a locked room, the key of which was with the butler. Hence the name.
