Small Kitchen Remodel Ideas 2021 Before And After
Our original kitchen, built in 1992, was an antique oak structure with some stainless steel appliances added by the previous owners. Over the years, we have completed many different budget kitchen DIY projects.

From the addition of glass tiles to some of the new appliances, there have been some minor upgrades and improvements. When we first painted the kitchen cabinets white, it made a huge difference.
We definitely bought our house when oak was popular and even 8 years ago beige was still a good color choice. We still love our favorite neutral wall colors, but our style and taste have changed. The good news for us is that we were able to use these budget DIY projects to update our kitchen.
Now we are trying to find more timeless options when choosing home decor. However, we don’t want to add anything new to this kitchen if we don’t need to.
You can paint the walls, cabinets and even tile the backsplash to help transform the kitchen to match your existing aesthetic. A fresh coat of paint can go a long way. At first we planned to repaint just the lower cabinets, but after we started we realized that everything needed a new coat or two.

Whether it’s painting, replacing doors, or completely opening up your kitchen, your cabinets are a great place to start when designing your dream kitchen. The good news is that you don’t have to paint it if it’s not your style.
For example, in this small kitchen, our friends achieved a modern look without painting the oak cabinets! We love the modern touches like the new matte black appliances and upgraded faucets.
Since our oak cabinets had seen better days, we decided to paint them instead of completely replacing them. Painting them was our cheapest and best option.
For reference, our kitchen has 12 upper cabinets with doors, an island with 3 drawer levels, 2 cabinets, 11 lower cabinet doors and 12 drawers. The overall layout of our kitchen is 12″ x 14″ = 168 square feet.

The upper cabinets are approximately 40 square feet and the lower cabinets are approx. 43.5 square feet of actual closet space.
So, using the painting figures above, we estimate that a professional painting to professionally refinish our kitchen cabinets would cost about $2,800.
About $150 for paint and supplies. Please note that we also have leftover paint and materials. It’s safe to say that professional kitchen painting costs more than a few hundred dollars.
The $150 spent on paint and supplies (new foam roller, tape frog, gloss remover, paint pan) was definitely worth it to paint not only the cabinets, but the tile as well.

We compared different white paints and chose the purest, purest color of emerald paint. We don’t want to contrast with the existing white on our baseboard. Be sure to test paint colors in different lighting conditions and compare them to existing paint colors on baseboards, etc.
Sherwin-Williams says a gallon of paint should cover about 100 square feet. And with my calculations above, it makes perfect sense why I should only carry a gallon of paint. I have some green left over because I also had to paint the outside of the island and didn’t include that in my square footage estimate.
We chose a large French fridge with a bottom freezer that has served our family well. Now we can store food and hold it easily. Not to mention we’ve had this version of the LG fridge for over 10 years and it still works great!
You’d be surprised how much debris can build up on your handles, hinges, and cabinet edges. Don’t forget to wipe down the tops of cabinets and appliances as well. Starting with a clean slate makes all the difference, especially if you’re not doing a full teardown.

Hardware may seem like a small thing, but consider buying more modern handles or knobs, or painting your existing hardware to match your new style.
If you’re looking for beautiful countertops but are on a tight budget, you can use composite materials like a stone outdoor island to save money.
Adding a new Capiz chandelier to the kitchen island helped bring all of our design options together. Enjoy adding texture, warmth and character when choosing light fixtures.
You can reuse old items or buy modern benches or stools for your kitchen. There is no need to completely replace the table as new seats can give it a modern look.
Delafield Galley Kitchen Remodel
The glass mosaic we had in the kitchen was really old. I had to either remove it and redo everything, or try to paint it. We figured if it looks awful, we’ll remove it anyway.
However, this DIY kitchen project turned out much better than we expected. We just love the clean and simple look. The gloss with our current countertops was white, but white was definitely a safe color.
As you can see, structurally our kitchen has never changed. By making small improvements over time, we were able to achieve an overall look that we are proud of while working within our price range.
We love our two-tone wardrobe. I wouldn’t have thought to do this a few years ago. But the idea of a dark lower cabinet was very appealing to small children. Anyone who comes by always comments on how much they love this green.

According to Home Advisor, a professional painter might charge $100 for doors and $25 for drawers, or $75 to $150 for cabinets. Sprayer and brush/roller costs are usually the same. Yes, you get better coverage with an airbrush (but at what cost)?
Prices may vary depending on your location, but you can expect to pay between $50 and $100 for high-quality cabinet paint. Our local store has a list price of $95.99. Proclassic was our favorite paint (before we discovered Emerald) and it’s 79.99. However, don’t let the price fool you. I was able to get a 30% discount. I paid $67/gallon for Emerald urethane enamel siding.
Yes, it is possible to renovate or remodel the kitchen yourself, especially if you work with existing fixtures and features. With proper planning, do-it-yourself projects like painting, installing a new backsplash, upgrading light fixtures, and refitting cabinets can be done by beginners willing to put in a little effort. When in doubt, consult a professional because you can save money in the long run.
Since our cabinets were already primed and painted white, I didn’t have to put them up. Here we are all talking about how to refinish painted cabinets. For this inexpensive kitchen remodel (after 8 years) I purchased a gallon of SW Rookwood Sash Green and SW Emerald Urethane Trim in the main color (high reflective white). I have about half a gallon of each paint left. I also used white paint to paint the back panel.

Pro Tip: When shopping for paint at Sherwin Williams, I always buy paint on sale. Earlier in the summer they had a 40% discount. However, my salesperson at the store told me that probably won’t happen this year because they are low on supply.
I hope my taste in home decor doesn’t change too much. If they do, I can always try another budget kitchen renovation to suit current tastes.
Wow, this is a great post! My family and I are planning to redo our old kitchen in the next few months. We discuss things like the total cost, whether we’ll do it ourselves or hire someone, whether we’ll rent a junkyard, and what style and color scheme we want. Your post is helpful and we will definitely use your suggestions!
Looks good and thanks for all the advice. Did you use a countertop kit on your countertop?
