Tiny Galley Kitchen Layout – “Shaya’s kitchen is the size of an Amtrak car,” says Alon Shaya, executive chef and co-owner of Shaya Restaurant in New Orleans. “Everything was in a straight line, there wasn’t enough room for two people to walk across at the same time.” Read on to find out how his team made the most of the limited space.
In small kitchens, it is very important to make use of spaces that are not easily accessible. “We put in good tall shelves and use ladders that are easy to store or don’t take up too much space,” says Shaya. “Pick one that fits, or if you have closet space, put it in there.”

It makes it easier to figure out what’s there and where, and visually expands the space. “I love open shelving because it makes the space feel a little bigger,” says Shaya. “If you close all the cupboards, there is less space.”
Creative Galley Kitchen Remodel Ideas That You Will Love
Organize your kitchen according to the dishes you cook. If you eat eggs for breakfast every morning, make sure the pot is close to the stove and that you have olive oil and salt on hand. “Cooking can be really frustrating if you’re traveling to several different places to do something,” Shaya said. “And then you feel like a terrible cook because you walked six feet to get a spatula and burned the eggs.”
If you are involved in the design phase of your kitchen, place cabinets at the ends of narrow spaces. “You can throw things in there and it frees up space in front of the stove for more prep work,” she says. “The prep area is the most sought after place in the kitchen as everything is right next to each other.”
Clean out the old ones now – they’re taking up valuable cupboard space. “We all tend to save the spice because you buy turmeric for a recipe and only use a quarter of a teaspoon,” says Shaya. “A year and a half later, it’s still taking up space and covering with salt.” Toss or forgive the old stinker. After a few months, they lose most of their original quality.
If you don’t have room for a trash can near your cooking area, use a plate to catch trash and other waste. “When I’m cooking, I always have a big bowl handy so I can put things like onion skins, paper towels in,” Shaya said. “When I’m done, I just take the bag and throw everything out right away.”
Galley Kitchen Ideas To Enhance Space
One side of the kitchen should be used for cooking. “Your oven should be in the middle on one side with all the other appliances, and the other side is an open dining area,” says Shaya. “Plus, it frees up space for two people to cook in the kitchen at the same time, which is sometimes difficult to do in the kitchen.”
“When I create an original menu for one of my restaurants, I cook everything in the kitchen at home,” says Tim Cushman, chef and owner of Covina in New York City. “Maximizing the space I have is very important.”
When designing the kitchen, Cushman emphasized modularity by using compact containers. “That way you use every little space,” he said. “I went to the thrift store and bought all kinds of small shelves, racks and other containers that are easy to move around.” Baskets, shelves and containers help you prioritize the items and ingredients you use the most, but are also easy to move around when necessary Walk.
Cushmans continues its modular organization and offers small to medium sized strollers. “If you can’t store certain items, like pots and pans, you can take them out of the kitchen when you’re not using them,” she says. “This allows you to keep them in a closet or something.”

Although the kitchen may not seem like a good place for a cutting board, it can save space for storing cutting boards. “I bought a notepad at an office supply store and used it to cut on the board,” Cushman said. “When it stands upright instead of lying flat, it frees up space for cooking.”
While plenty of storage space is essential for a Galle kitchen, having a few collectibles on hand can make cooking easier. “Try to set up your kitchen so that in an emergency, you’ll always have what you need,” says Cushman. “You can use plastic containers for spoons, slices, and other reusable items. So if you need something like a lip to scoop extra out of, you can grab it quickly.”
Keep a modular plate for your favorite spices and organize the ones you need before you start cooking. “You can get modular hard plastic or bamboo containers,” Cushman said. “Take the spices you need for a particular dish and choose before you start. When you are done, you can store them in a cupboard away from heat and light. ” You can put all your spices in the oven, but remember, Heat and light can destroy the color and the taste of the spice.
“I started with a very small restaurant with one table,” says Dominique Ansel, chef and owner of Dominique Ansel Bakery and Dominique Ansel Kitchen in New York City. “It’s definitely hard to find storage space.”
Tips For Making The Most Of A Galley Kitchen
Yes, even chefs do this: pack those pans. This saves space. “Collect the best jars, like matryoshka dolls, and put the smaller ones next to the bigger ones, as many as you can,” says Ansel. Now is not the time to worry about how symmetrical the items in your closet will look.
The best type of litter box is one that can be removed with little effort. “There are hatches in the bottom of the boat where I can take dirt in and out, which is both aesthetically pleasing and practical,” says Ansel.
Your appliances should be evenly spaced along the length of the kitchen. “If you have to open both doors, you don’t want a dishwasher or stove next to the fridge, and you want to keep the fridge away from hot things,” says Ansel. Also stay away from windows, which can affect the temperature of the oven.
If you are in the planning stage of a kitchen, think about how your cooking space will be lit. Are there windows? Is there already enough lighting in the space? “Good lighting is very important for small spaces like the kitchen,” says Ansel.
Small Kitchen Ideas To Transform Your Space
“Having a good range hood is important, especially if you cook a lot,” says Ansel. “It absorbs all the heat and moisture which helps keep the room temperature down.”
