Using white or lighter colors in your room, especially on the walls, will make it feel bigger. I think white walls are classic, but if you don’t like that style, you can stick to subtle colors and it will instantly open up your room. We painted Little B’s room white to medium gray, and it made a huge difference in how spacious the room felt.

Getting rid of things in your room that you haven’t used or loved in years will instantly help your space feel open and spacious. Donate what you don’t use and keep decorations to a minimum. When we renovated our basement playroom, we donated lots of bags of toys and books, and it feels amazing!

Mirrors reflect light around the room, and using them on the walls will help make the space appear much larger. There are mirrors for all styles and prices. I recently added a large round mirror from IKEA to our breakfast nook and I love how it looks!

Many people hang curtains and blinds over the windows, but try moving the rods up the wall to give the walls a lift. I like mine about 4-6 inches from the ceiling to make my room look spacious. It’s a simple trick that makes a world of difference!

When working with smaller rooms, choose smaller furniture. Look for small chairs, round tables and “apartment-sized” furniture. On the other hand, you can use large furniture in your room, but then there are not many pieces in your space.

Using vertical lines in your decor will help draw attention, make your ceiling feel taller, and therefore make your entire space appear larger. You can do this with DIY treatments, wallpaper, tall trees and lighting fixtures. I love how my mom added vertical boards and battens to her house to make the walls taller.

Multipurpose furniture is a great way to have less furniture and thus make your room spacious. Look for things like ottomans with hidden storage (like this one in my mom’s living room), tables with drawers, and sleeper sofas.

When choosing wall colors, furniture and accents for your room, try monochromatic or contrasting colors. Monochromatic means you only use one color, but you can use different shades of that color from light to dark. Analogous means you use colors next to each other on the color wheel (click here for my free printable color wheel guide). For example, I used green and blue in the dining room decor above. They are next to each other on the color wheel, which makes them more comfortable and open than opposite colors on the wheel.

Fight the urge to fill every corner of your room with furniture and decorations. Leaving empty space, wall and table space will help your home feel open, airy and spacious.

Whether it’s natural light or lighting, make sure your home has enough light. Keep the curtains sheer on either side of your windows, use shades for privacy while letting sunlight in, or use lamps and ceiling lights. Your space will automatically feel bigger.

What do you think? Do you have any tips on how to make a small space look bigger? If you live in a shared house, a one-bedroom apartment, or in an urban area, you may be living in a room smaller than a fancy closet.

If you’re not blessed with a decent-sized bedroom, we’ve got some tips to help make your bedroom with a shoe closet look like a spacious retreat.

From Paint To Furniture: 10 Ways To Make Your Home Look Bigger

The biggest mistake you can make in a small bedroom is wasting floor or surface space on things that can be hung on the wall.

Lamps, lamps, shelves, bowls and shelves can be mounted on the wall and this will free up your limited space for important things like the bed and bedside table.

When you decide on your furniture, you need to focus on the mirror. They create a wonderful illusion of space, tricking the eye into thinking the room is bigger than it really is.

A little trick is to place mirrors facing each other on opposite walls. It creates a window-like effect and adds a hidden optical illusion of space to the room.

Buy or build floor-to-ceiling shelves and cabinets. They will create long vertical lines that will give the illusion of space. Plus, you’ll get the bonus of enough storage space for an entire closet or shelf.

Dark colors can be beautiful and luxurious when you have the space for them, but in a small room they can be oppressive and closed.

When decorating, choose lighter colors such as white, cream and gray and be careful with the use of colors. An acid yellow bed will look great in a large and airy hallway, but in a small bedroom, the color may be a bit harsh.

It makes sense to choose the biggest bed that can fit in the space, but then if you put a small nightstand next to it, it will look silly. It is ideal to choose furniture that is smaller, more suitable for your small bedroom, just make sure that it is compatible in size.

Ways To Make Your House Look Expensive On A Budget

There is nothing unnecessary in your bedroom. If you can get by with just a bed and a nightstand, that’s fine.

This is definitely difficult if you live in a shared house, but try to minimize the number of things you keep in the bedroom. You should avoid keeping computers, excessive furniture, laundry baskets, bookshelves and iron table in the bedroom if you can.

It can be tempting to move furniture into ’empty’ areas such as doorways and hallways, but this is never a good idea. If every time you leave the room you have to turn sideways to slide in front of the bed, that’s not the right furniture arrangement.

You need to make sure that your bedroom is comfortable and functional, and blocking the passageway is not the way to do that.
