Well, while it might not be realistic to compare yourself to a cartoon heart, getting bigger, brighter, and more vibrant eyes definitely is. All you need are some industry insider tips…

Eye Makeup Tips For Close Set Eyes

We asked a few of our favorite makeup artists to talk about the best tricks they know to make eyes (of all shapes and sizes) look bigger.

According to MAC senior world artist Carol Mackie, it’s an absolute must-have. “There are so many little tricks to actually open your eyes, but this simple tool does it in a second.”

She finds it especially helpful when one eye looks smaller and closer than the other. “Just curl the lashes of that eye and it will open and balance the eye.”

If your eyeshadow collection consists of black and navy, then you, my friend, have an excuse to shop around.

“My biggest tip for making your eyes look bigger is not to use too much shadow,” says Serena Wyllie, who has more than 170,000 followers on Instagram thanks to her jaw-dropping skills.

MUA Marnie Avagiannis echoes, “Lighter shades and reflective eyeshadow will enlarge areas. I like to use light champagne shades for a soft, glam look.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to ditch your favorite eyeliner either, but Carroll recommends swapping out the familiar black for a darker brown, like the M.A.C. ($47 at Adore Beauty).

“[Apply] a third of the lash line, apply very lightly underneath, then blend with a brush to soften.”

Or, if you already have a darker eyeshadow in your arsenal, this also works as a softer alternative. “Instead of using eyeliner, try using a dark eyeshadow and place it directly on the lash line for extra definition, which is more subtle. And in no way makes the eyes look more little ones,” says Serena.

If the above techniques don’t quite work for your eye shape, tight eyeliner could be a lifesaver. It involves applying eyeliner to the upper fold just below the root of your lashes (yes, close enough to your actual eyeball, not for the fussy).

Marnie says this method “creates the illusion of fuller lashes without taking up space on the eyelid.”

Just as you highlight your cheekbones to add dimension, your eyes can benefit from the same type of treatment.

Try to focus your shimmery eyeshadow on the center of your lids and finish with “a shimmery pearl eyeshadow in the inner corner,” Serena says. “The light reflects that and instantly illuminates your eyes.”

If your dark circles are distracting from your beautiful big eyes, you may need to camouflage them with color corrector before applying concealer.

“I like to cover my dark spots with a peach concealer,” says Marnie. “Apply it only on the dark areas, then you can apply a brighter concealer on top. Thin layers always work better than heavy makeup.”

“I often see under-eye concealer turn gray because the color chosen is too light,” says Carroll. Look for words like “lightning” instead of changing shades.

Can You Make Your Eyes Bigger With Makeup?

Applying a good quality eye cream to the eye area can also go a long way in ensuring correct application of concealer.

“Longer, softer, thinner lashes in the outer corners, then painted in the inner corners, will open up and open the lid area,” says Marnie.

If strips aren’t your thing, individual lashes are a great option (like Ardell’s Duralash Starter Kit, $8.99 at Amazon). “I took a single lash and applied them to the outer third of the eye to lift and lengthen the eye,” Serena explains.

You can also nourish your natural lashes with a growth serum like RapidLash® Eyelash Enhancing Serum ($69 at Amazon), targeting the outer corners for length. Tip – avoid letting your eyes wander.

Get The Big Eye Look Using Just One Product

Overall, the biggest tip I took from the video below is to avoid stuffing everywhere. As you can see, that makes a huge difference. Unless you’re going for a bold smoky eye look, I’d avoid all-around eyeliner.

Instead, try drawing the outer corners of the eyes and try using dark brown instead of black. Also try using a highlighter in the corner of your eye! Subtle highlights are enough to make your eyes stand out even more.
