Going from a large open yard to a small, close yard took some practice!

In fact, our Tanglewood House balcony was almost out of order! That was the only thing I didn’t like and couldn’t change!

What worries us is that it is not easy to get into the backyard from the house. To get to the balcony we had to either go around the house and go to the backyard or go through the unfinished basement.

We also know that since we are a member of the Home Owners Association, it is not possible to change the footprint of our house and there are very strict rules regarding the appearance of all villas.

Bobby and I had a lot of discussions about a big thing on our cheat list and in the end the pro list was so strong that he over decided the deck.

Our plan is to finish the basement and make another living space with a bathroom, so eventually we will go downstairs to a large lounge and then through French doors to the terrace.

We partially overlook the golf course and horse farm. Bobby loves sitting on the deck and watching the golfers on the 7th tee!

So, let’s talk about how to decorate a small attic. There are a few things to consider when decorating a small yard.

The first thing you should do when decorating a small attic is to think about how it will be used.

Bobby and I were thinking about how we would like to live in this space. These are the things we want our garden to be used for…

That’s a tall order for a small patio area. We hoped to tick all the boxes, but knew we had to get a little creative.

Beautiful Outdoor Patio Design & Decor Ideas

The next step in the process of decorating the yard is to approach the design of the attic. Know about the dimensions, shape, architectural elements, materials and other important things of the place.

In other words, this deck had beautiful elements, but was pretty much a blank slate and very small.

It was perfect for an outdoor living room. A great advantage of our yard is that it is covered and somewhat protected from the weather.

Best Balcony Ideas To Decorate A Small Balcony

It’s important to measure your space, the things you want to go on your patio, and the negative space around your furniture. Too many items in a small space or too little negative space between them can make your small yard feel even smaller!

As with other decorations, it is important to decide on the color palette. This creates a unified and attractive look. In a small space, the color palette is especially important!

We didn’t want to replace the chairs we got from StoneGable because they were great chairs and are in great shape! So we plowed the grounds around them. They became our inspiration!

Because of the chairs, blue played a big role in our color palette. I decided to light up the colors on the ceiling for a fun and bright atmosphere! I also brought some green garden chairs from StoneGable so I thought they would be fun to use as a drinks table on the patio. So lime green became the accent color of our summer terrace.

Patio Decor Ideas

It was so easy to change the look of the patio by changing just one color in the color palette!

Speaking of changing the color palette seasonally, I think it’s a great idea! Knowing the right colors for a change can make seasonal decorating a breeze in any room of your home or outdoors!

The cushions on these wide chairs are surprisingly comfortable! The couple sits against one of the patio seating walls, with an accent table from StoneGable between them. I found both the chairs and the accent table years ago at Birch Lane.

The first thing I got was a white sofa. I wanted a long sofa because it was placed against the long wall.

Finding the perfect sofa for our patio turned out to be harder than I thought! There wasn’t much choice of outdoor sofas with metal frames. And they were usually in my price range! In fact, many of them cost more than my couches!

Plus, most of today’s patio furniture is too big and bulky to work with our small patio!

Another limiting factor was the pillow. White pillows were not a topic of conversation! I had to open them to wash them.

After much searching I found the one we have now. I can’t say exactly what I thought of the decoration, but it’s very close.

I was lucky enough to find a matching metal coffee table. I love the idea of matching the accent table and coffee table in such a small space. Limiting patterns will keep a small space from being too busy or visually stimulating.

I bought and returned three other rugs before settling on this blue and white indoor rug. I am the returning queen.

Then I tried some subtle blue and white rugs to get a bright bold rug.

The rug occupies an open space and is large enough to comfortably accommodate the front legs of sofas and chairs. The rug adds a lot of texture to our outdoor space.

One of Bobby’s patio must-haves was a swing set. We had eight rocking chairs on our StoneGable porch and loved swinging on summer nights.

I think swinging on the porch is important to Bobby, so it’s definitely important to me, even if the rocker does crowd the porch a bit.

Balcony Decoration Ideas To Energize Your Outdoor Space

Since we love having friends and family over on the patio for drinks and snacks and even meals, I wanted to use the bar cart as a beverage station and store food, flatware, napkins, and more.

We have a nice black metal and glass cart but it was too big for the porch.

I found this super bright lime green folding stroller that can be parked in the back corner of our porch. This brightly colored cart gets a lot of use!

Begonias are newly planted in this way. It produces many large showy red flowers and huge winged leaves.

My favorite plants are these Chinese fish bowls. I’ve had them for decades. They used to be in our hall, but now they work as outdoor installations.

Other items such as pots, pans, decorative balls and coasters are also featured on the patio! I’ve been thinking about my jewelry and maybe I’ll lighten them up in the spring.

One of the things we look forward to doing at our cabin is alfresco dining. But we didn’t have room for a dining table!
