Texture layers are images that fit your photos. The texture image has no theme and is often just a detailed pattern. Texture is an image that focuses on the tactile aspects of our world. They can be rough, smooth, dull or shiny. They can be abstract or have a recognizable theme. Once you start seeing them, you’ll find options all around you.
Texture layer files are easy to find. Search photography sites like Dreamstime, and thousands of options will appear. Many of them are free to use.

You can also create your own texture files. A piece of wood or a flower petal has texture in nature. A texture can be a wall with graffiti, a rusty fence or a concrete path. Use your macro lens to zoom in. Find abstract patterns that we cannot normally see with the naked eye.

Many smartphone apps create patterns or use a fractal generator to create colorful patterns. You can also use Photoshop’s many filters to create backgrounds from existing photos.
To add a texture in Photoshop you need an image and a texture image. Don’t worry if the texture file is smaller than your main image. We change its size. Your main image can be anything. Texture works well on images that are not already too tired and have some space around the subject.

Open your main image and texture image in Photoshop. If you’re working in Lightroom, select both image files and click Image > Edit In > Open as Layers in Photoshop. This will open a single Photoshop document with two layers. One layer is your main image, the other is the texture. Rename the texture layer ‘Texture’. Drag your texture layer over your main image in the Layers panel if it isn’t already there.
If you don’t see the Layers panel in the lower right column of the workspace, go to the Windows menu. Select Windows > Layers (or F7).
To open files directly in Photoshop, first open your main image. You can right click on the image and open with Photoshop. Or you can open Photoshop first, then choose File > Open and navigate to it. Photoshop will open most image files as well as PDF files.

Once your main image is open, create a new white layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer or use the new layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. It looks like a rectangle with a + sign. Rename this layer to ‘Texture’ and click OK. Find your texture file and drag it into Photoshop. The texture will be copied to the empty layer. The next step is to change the texture to fit your image layer.
Select the texture layer and go to the Edit dropdown menu. Click Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl or ⌘T). Drag the corners and edges so that the texture layer covers your image. When you hold the Shift key while dragging you can drag each edge individually. Click the checkmark at the top of the workspace or press return or enter.
Also, try changing the texture level for a different effect. Go to Edit > Transform > Rotate 90° clockwise. Or open the transformation for free and move over a corner. The cursor will change to a crossbow with two arrows. Click and drag the corners around to rotate the image.
Resize so that the texture layer hides your main image. The next step is to merge the layers. This will reveal your main image and blend the layers.
How To Apply A Grunge Texture To A Photo Background In Photoshop
Compound methods are different ways to interact between layers. The blending modes are near the top of the Layers panel. By default, the Blend Mode dropdown is set to Normal. There is no ‘right’ blending method. When adding textures, the common blending modes are Lighten, Overlay and Soft Light. Just click on any blending mode to see how your image will change. Some blending modes allow your main image to show more than others. Others will change the colors in your photo.
Don’t worry too much about the details. Find the blending mode you want. The next step is to refine the amount of texture that is visible.
You can customize the texture overlay so that it only appears when you want it to. In most cases, we want the texture to be visible, but not overwhelm the main image. The first thing to do is to reduce the opacity of the texture layer. Click on the texture layer and select the Opacity slider at the top of the Layers panel. Without proper tension. Try setting the opacity to 50%. Then add more or less transparency until you feel the balance is right.
You can also lighten or remove the texture from parts of your main image. For example, when a person is in my main image, I often remove or lighten the texture on their face. To do this, create a layer mask. Click on the texture layer and go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Or click the layer mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. It looks like a rectangle with a circle inside.

You should now see a white rectangle to the right of your texture. Click on the white layer mask.

Select the brush tool and set it to black. Use a soft brush with 40-50% opacity. Paint over the areas where you want to remove the texture. Note that black appears on the white layer mask and paint. Black hides the texture layer. If you made a mistake and want to put a texture back in place, switch to a white brush and paint the texture back in. The white shows the cover. With a low opacity brush, you can lighten the texture from an area without removing it completely.
To intensify the texture effect, stack more than one texture on the main image. You can apply a texture overlay to some elements of your image and a different texture to other elements. For example, you can use one layer for the background and another for a foreground element.

There is no limit to the amount of visual interest you can create with texture. Adding textures in Photoshop is easy. Even a subtle texture makes an image more interesting. The viewer may not even realize what you did to achieve a rich look.
The blending mode gives the textures a unique look. You can use the same texture in many different images and change the blending mode. The results will be different every time. This, along with being able to cover textures, opens up endless possibilities.
With textures, you can make your images look like they were printed on paper or silk. You can create a vintage look or a shiny and futuristic effect. Texture is easy to apply, but the creative possibilities are endless.
