There can be hundreds of variations that will work well in the space you have and encourage daycare. You just have to be creative in how you set it up. People are always asking me to check out my daycare sites, so I thought I’d make a blog post about it and share it.

When I first started daycare in my home 25 years ago, I thought I needed all the best toys and equipment. I spend all my time and money trying to get the best toys and everything. Over time I have known, less and less.
I have a very small house and it is impossible to store a lot of extras. When I have a ton of toys for the kids, they literally throw them around and work. When I only have a few things, they are creative and go well together.
It’s important to introduce them to “new” things, so I packed all of my toys in the set into large plastic pieces and placed them on these shelves. Each week, whoever is chosen as Monday’s “Star of the Day” will choose a “featured toy” for the week. I set up a tote and the kids can use it to encourage daycare play every day. Then on Friday, we leave and the following Monday a different star picks a different “special toy”. It works very well for us.

I reduced some of the clutter and made more sense in games for kids. Prepare food and other basic toys for clothes, playhouse, dishes and kitchen, we have most of them.
We have blocks, dolls, tool benches, trucks and cars and of course superhero costumes. I buy a few new things a year to replace things that wear out over time and my kids are so happy to play here. A daycare provider encourages play in many ways, the environment being one of them.
Our potty area is in my bedroom. Remember I have a small house, less than 1,200 square feet. I have a changing area against the wall outside my son’s bathroom.
I only use the master bath for the kids because they are really dirty and I don’t want my guests to have to use their bathroom. It is safely out of the back of the house. It works for me. You can decide whether you like it or not.

In the changing area, there are boxes with changing boxes for each child. I love the drawers on my new changing table. My old one is open and it’s a pain to always dust everything on the shelf. Now they don’t collect dust in boxes. We also store our stuff there.
Small drawers next to the changing table hold extra diapers and wipes so I can refill the changing area. The ladder on the right is for children to climb up.
I’ve seen those awesome changing tables with stairs, but they were out of my price range, so I made my own. It’s much easier to carry them on my back than to carry them off the ground. I do not take children, so only small children use this table. They can quickly break your back.
My room is also my office area. My desk and computer are there. It’s a great place to work on papers, lesson plans, and blogging while the baby sleeps.

Our third room is the kitchen storage area. It also has a guest bed. When you look at my kitchen, you’ll see why I need more space to cook. I also have a small collection of musical instruments in my room. Children can come and get them for music time and return them to themselves.
The main room off the great room is the playroom. This and the great room are the main indoor spaces where children play. They also sleep in the same room. A baby was born that day who wasn’t there, so there were 7 mats in this room when he was here. They almost touched each other. It works well for us. We have a routine and we stick to it, but it’s an art.
The cabinets in this room hold special toys, figurines, lacing cards and other items. We put the dresser in the middle, the kitchen and the bench outside all the time. We also have toys on a small shelf. Daycare has a lot to encourage play.
Mats are stored in boxes with games. Children make their own beds and separate their beds. My very talented mother sewed me mats and pillow covers. I have had them for 20 years. He made me two sets and they turned out great. My mother-in-law sewed a quilt of every color a few years ago.

In the great room, we have a check area where children take their feet from the departure area and place them in one of 7 envelopes. It helps in name recognition along with other social studies. The legs are the same color as the rest of the mat and the baby cup. They all know their colors and don’t mix them.
There are also clans in the room for their books. On this bench we put a special toy and a hook for their jackets with their name on it.
In the dining room, we have our bookshelf, my notebook for all my writing, my personal reference books, our daily art supplies, my DHS paperwork, compliance file, and license keys license board, menu, bulletin board with emergency contacts. . , schedules, and all other important ads, and tables we eat and use for photography, etc.

Off the kitchen, I have a small laundry room and then my garage. In the garage, I keep art supplies and science materials.
