Although I have been selling baked goods for years, I recently tried selling food online. It was a huge hit and I can’t wait to share what I did to bake at home and run out in just a few hours.
Bakeries Adjust To New Marketplace During The Pandemic
Whether you’re just testing the waters or ready to start your own bakery, selling online is a great way to sell baked goods on a budget.
When you own a restaurant, you need to have a strategy to connect with your customers. Some bakers find customers at the store, but in this article we will focus on online sales.
Selling baked goods online is a great idea to find new customers and take the first step in starting a small business.
We recently asked home bakers if they get the most customers from Facebook or Instagram, and 88% said Facebook! The reason bakers love selling on Facebook is how easy it is to connect with your target market. You can sell through your personal profile, business page, Facebook online store and local groups. Because of all these options, Facebook is the best way to sell baked goods online.

Instagram is the most popular platform for your baked goods. Instagram can help you reach local customers if you update your Instagram bio and have a good hashtag idea.
Here are the steps I followed to start selling candy online locally. I hope to avoid what I did. This is just meant to get you started. Of course, this is not a unique project. It works for me in my small town. Hope it works for you too.
Please use common sense and safety when dealing with the public and making home deliveries.
Selling home baked goods is sometimes called home food. Your state will set the guidelines you must follow. Some of the things you can control are: the ingredients you can use, who you can sell to, and where you can sell.

Every state is different when it comes to selling baked goods at home. You should know what laws, regulations and licenses are required in your country.

Deciding what to sell is a difficult task for baking enthusiasts as most of us love to bake everything!
You can ask your friends and colleagues what their favorite cookies are, bake something you already know, or try something new.
How To Start A Successful Cake Business
Just remember that you can’t be all things to all people. Once you find a few baked goods that sell well and are profitable, you can specialize in that food.
I decided to start small to get the hang of it. I included cookies, bars, and muffins in my first candy box.
For my online sales, I start with a medium box containing about 6-8 different quality items. I am thinking of making many boxes with many goodies inside.
Here is the Amazon link for the box and stickers I used to make my bakery box:
Homemade Food Could Soon Be Easier To Sell (and Buy) In D.c.
I also wanted to add a personal touch with stickers. I didn’t have a logo yet so I used these cute stickers I found on Amazon.
This is what my candy boxes look like when they are full of candy. If you have a business card, you can put it in the box for a personal note.
This is the most important step and one that many skip. It will set the right attitude for your future baking, so take the time to learn how to price recipes and make sure you charge enough.
I have a whole blog post on how to pay your bills. If you haven’t learned how to calculate the cost of your recipe and mark it up for profit, stop what you’re doing and read the article. I cover the basics such as:

Your cost variables are things like the amount of ingredients, the cost of your packaging, and your labels. You should save your receipts and add how much it cost you to produce the product.
Overhead costs for home bakers are usually very low. This includes things like the prices you pay to sell at the grocery store, the apps you pay to help you run your restaurant, and the miles on your car for deliveries. Remember to add a little extra to each item you sell to cover your monthly expenses.
The next thing you need to do is decide how much you want from each sale. This is called income or signature. It’s different for everyone, but you can average 25-45% of each product for revenue.
I try to offer as many payment methods as possible to make it easy for everyone. You don’t have to invest money here – that’s just “getting your feet wet” when it comes to sales. Now, you can open a free Venmo, Paypal, or Facebook Pay account (which works through Facebook Messenger).

The goal is to make payments as easy as possible for your customers. Always ensure payment is secured before negotiating delivery or collection.
Down the road, you might want to look into something like Square to take credit cards. To learn more about why I want to use Square to sell baked goods, check out this recent article.
Before you pack up, get everything packed and ready to go. Here’s what you need to do before listing your baked goods online:

I received my first online order about 5 minutes after placing it. I’m glad I prepared everything because people want the good stuff right away.
Another way to sell online is through pre-order. Pre-order means people order your products before you bake them. Flash sales are great because you don’t waste product that doesn’t sell, but it also means you’re only selling to people who plan ahead.
You can try selling baked goods with flash sales and presales and see what works best for you.

When you’re just starting out, it can be tempting to borrow photos from other bakers. Especially if you don’t have a good image of yourself yet.
Don’t underestimate your own skills, even simple and rustic desserts can sell well. Start small and get into the habit of adding little by little to the photo space each time you post a product.
A quick look on Instagram will reveal many amazing products that recreate icons, sports icons and popular shoes and bags. All recognized names are protected by trademarks.
Making a cake that reproduces the artwork for personal use is fine, but selling the cake to a customer is illegal.

You must decide whether you are willing to take the risk of licensing the product.
In my personal baking, I solve this by using a copy of the authorized names and symbols. You can view a wide selection of licensed images here.

After my first one I added some payment methods. Not everyone uses Venmo, so we added Paypal and also paid via Facebook Messenger Pay.
The Complete Guide To Selling Baked Goods At The Farmers Market
I just put my candy in a plastic bag for my child and sent it to the address the buyer sent me.
As this happened during the global epidemic, I wore a face mask and received contactless delivery. I put the box on the customer’s front seat, went back to my car and told him it was there.
I have no problem with this delivery method, although bakers who live in big cities often choose the public
