Kitchen Island With Sink And Dishwasher Plans – Creating a custom kitchen island for our Ikea kitchen was one of the most difficult parts of the process. I loved using Ikea cabinet frames and DIY doors to create an affordable and functional kitchen. However, using such a modular system required a lot of creativity to achieve the custom components I envisioned. When we were planning this kitchen, we had a lot of balancing and tweaking of plans to meet all the constraints. Budget, timelines, aesthetics, and materials were important factors that shaped the final design and construction process we settled on. I hope this helps explain why and how we did it this way, and is especially useful for those planning to use Ikea and semihandmade kitchens. I’ll break down the planning process and then share the most important construction details we used. Because your island will vary in size and configuration, there isn’t a single set of plans to build your island. However, I’m happy to answer any specifics about our design and I’ll answer those questions in a follow-up post.

Not surprisingly, this is where I start my planning. I wanted a bigger island, but it had to fit within our space limitations. Initially, I started by laying out the track and track I wanted. The walkway between the main counters and the island should be wide enough to allow several people to work in the space without feeling cramped. We had to leave enough space at the back of the island to pull out the bar stools and still leave a walkway.

I started with the dishwasher and sink because of their standard size. I then adjusted the space left for the two Ikea cabinets by going back and changing the overall width of the island to accommodate it. This part of the process is where you get into the weeds, going back and forth between desired function and aesthetics. It was important to me that the overall shape of the island was balanced, not too long and thin and not too big or small for the space. I also had to consider what functional cabinets I wanted to put on the island – a trash can and storage drawers.

Actually, my heart was on Oak Island. But both budget and schedule quickly ruled it out. I knew that a custom island would be expensive to build and complete. I had a hard time finding a good carpenter that I trusted to build to my vision and be able to replicate what I wanted. Since we were short on time, I didn’t have enough time to find this trade. Ultimately, I knew it would be more appropriate to continue the same Ikea cabinet frames on the island with the semi-handcrafted doors we used around the perimeter. I decided that pairing it with a warm SM matte light gray color would give the same warm feel and I could add wood detailing on the hood, shelves and window seat.

After settling on a semihandmade gray door for the island, I had to figure out the best way to finish the perimeter of the island to achieve the same finish. Initially, I tried to adapt my design to use finished handmade panels. This is a totally worth option if your island design has less detail than I was looking for. You really need to play around with the available panel sizes to find the right configuration for you. Ultimately, I wanted vertical panels for my island, so I knew their product wasn’t the right choice. We decided to dress ours in this metric spread and then trim it with the same baseboard as the rest of the house for a more traditional finish.

In the end, I decided to use a pre-painted semi-finished door. I really liked the idea of ​​a uniform “factory finish” on the doors. It also opened up some options for us to paint the island. My husband, an accountant, not a contractor, rocked the project. A lot of planning and calculation went into making sure it was centered, square, and could accommodate all the intended details. But it’s a completely DIY project with careful planning, the right tools, and basic carpentry skills. We do not intend this post to be a blueprint for building your island, but rather a guide to how and why we did things the way we did.

First he built a frame wall using 2 x 4’s, trying to make everything square and flat. The frame provides ample support for heavy work surfaces. It also set the stage for the more important island I had planned. The front opening made it possible to install 2 base cabinets, a sink cabinet and a dishwasher. Careful measurements and calculations are key here. We didn’t want any extra space around these items when they were added to the frame.

The wall height was 34.75 inches for a final countertop depth of 1.25 inches. This brings the total height of the island to a standard counter height of 36 inches. The frame walls were attached to the hardwood and floor with screws. We were very careful in mapping out our plumbing and electrical network. This will ensure that we don’t puncture the walls while attaching them.

Here the shelves were pushed into the frame. They have a sink cabinet next to them and a dishwasher at the far end. This is another reason why we decided to build a frame on the island. The side walls of the wing provide the necessary support for the work surface, as the dishwasher is on the outer edge. The length of these wing walls on the cabinet side is also an important detail to note. We wanted them to sit perfectly flush with the cabinet doors (3/4 inch thick). Knowing that we were facing a wing wall with trim board that is also 3/4 inch thick, the walls were flush with the cabinet frames. This allows the panels and cabinet doors to lie flat when installed.

A vertical shiplap was then added to exit the frame. Blocks were added to the wings (sidewalls) to provide a base for nailing the cover and provide additional strength.

The shiplap was attached to the sides. He also added 1/2-inch plywood to the inside of the wing walls to increase their width. This was done purely for aesthetic reasons so we could cover the ends of the 1x5s to add detail.

All nail holes were filled with wood putty and sanded to a smooth surface. This brand of shiplap is pre-primed and painted so it was a nice smooth surface to paint on.

Ikea cabinets are 30 inches in diameter, so they can be hung on the wall by attaching legs to the base. To get the required height for the shelves, a platform was made out of 2 x 4′ (actual dimensions 1.5″ x 3.5″) topped with 1″ plywood to create the required 4.5″ height. I wanted the island to feel like a piece of furniture, not a toe box. To accomplish this, we built the platform to a depth (from the front of the cabinet to the back of the cabinet) which allowed us to install the moldings so that they were flush with the cabinet doors.
