We asked some of our favorite makeup artists to spill the beans on the best tricks they know to make eyes (of all shapes and sizes) pop.
A must-have, according to Mack Senior Global Artist Carol Mackey. “There are a few tricks to actually opening your eyes, but this simple tool will do it in seconds.”
He finds this especially helpful if one eye appears smaller and larger than the other. “Just the persuasion done in that eye, will make it open wider and straighten the eye.”

How To Make Eyes Look Bigger With Makeup
“The biggest tip I would give to make your eyes look bigger is to not make your lashes too dark,” says Serena Wiley, who has more than 170,000 followers on Instagram thanks to her amazing art.
MUA Marnie Avagiannis says, “Eyeshadow and light eyeshadow will make the area look bigger. For a soft yet elegant look, I like to wear light shades and champagne.”
Don’t worry, you don’t have to give up your favorite eyeliner either, but Carol recommends swapping out your trusty black for a dark brown, like M.A.C Coffee Pencil ($47 at Adore Beauty).
“[Apply it] from about one-third around the eye through the lash line and down very gently, then blend with a brush to smooth.”

Or if you already have some dark eyeshadows in your arsenal, this can be a soft choice too. “Instead of a line, try taking a dark eyeshadow and place it on the lash line to add definition, it’s more subtle. And it won’t make the eyes look smaller,” said the Serena
If the above technique doesn’t work well for your eye shape, enhancing can be your savior. This is when eyeliner is applied to the upper waterline, near the base of the lashes (and yes, near the actual eyeball, not for conspiracy).
Marni says this method can “give the illusion of fuller lashes without taking up space on the lid.”

Try to keep your shimmery eyeshadow away from the center of the lid and “finish with a diamond shadow in the inner corner of the eye,” says Serena. “The light will reflect it and instantly give your eyes more pop.”
If dark circles under your eyes are distracting from your big, beautiful eyes, you may need to cover them with a colored concealer before using concealer.
“I like to cover the color with a peach concealer,” says Marni. “Just apply it to the darker areas and then you can use a lighter concealer on top. A thin layer always works better than a thick layer of makeup.”
“I often see concealers who look embarrassed under their eyes because the color they chose is too bright,” Carroll said. Look for words like “light” instead of changing shade.
Makeup For Small Eyes To Instantly Make Them Pop
Prepping the eye area with a good eye cream can also make a big difference and will ensure the mask glides on smoothly.
“Soft, smooth lashes that are longer in the outer corner and then in the inner corner define the lash line,” says Marni.
Individuals are also a good option if you don’t have pulled lashes (like Ardell’s Duralash Starter Kit, $8.99 at Amazon). “I take one lash and apply it to the outer third of the eye to add length to the eye,” says Serena.

Anthony’s first technique, lining the lower lids with a white or beige pencil, is truly a visual dream. “It takes the color out of the waterline, makes it look like part of the eye.” Skip the eyeliner in favor of something with a hint of peach or cream – it’ll look subtle.
Make your mascara really set by going over your eyes with concealer first. The contrast of the dark mascara with the light skin will frame the whole eye, although the slight curve of the product risks looking smoky. “A waterproof mask is best to avoid transferring any makeup onto the skin,” says Anthony. Set an illuminating eye concealer by dusting a light powder on top.
Adding a hint of shimmery silver or white eyeshadow to the inner corner is an old trick, but Anthony has a twist up his sleeve. To increase the eye-opening power of the technique, go with two products instead of one “I use a thick champagne-colored pencil and set it with a powder mark or shadow that’s a little.”

High-end false lashes, sure, but low? “The creases between the eyes create a bright, innocent look,” Anthony told us. Use it individually or cut a strip into small sections about a quarter inch and apply as you would the upper lid.
Anthony saved the eye-opening trick for last. It’s hard to master, but it’s worth the work, he promises: “Reform your eyes
Ways to stretch or bend lines for different effects. It’s fun to experiment with different line colors and how you layer them.” To start, draw a cat’s eye shape on the upper lid with a dark color. Switch to a lighter shade and draw a thin line under the lower eyelashes at the end of the eye.
