Split Level Renovation
Lochte is president of Lochte Architecture Group, which manages commercial and residential projects with offices in San Francisco and Sacramento. The couple discovered Lochte’s work in the pages of Marin magazine; A remodeled home he designed in Mill Valley was featured on the cover in 2017. The home was mid-century modern, and the couple strove for that aesthetic by incorporating warm wooden lofts into the interior.
The biggest obstacle to the project was that the 3,000-square-foot house was built on a hillside, so it couldn’t be any bigger. It had the right number of bedrooms, but the rest of the layout didn’t suit the family
“Our goal was to make every space functional,” says the wife. “And we did. Steve maximized every square inch. “

Mechanicsburg 70’s Split Level Renovation
Architect Steve Lochte used master partitions to separate the main living space from the staircase leading from the entry.
The upper floor had low ceilings and dark, narrow rooms. To solve this problem and give the family a great kitchen, Lochte raised the ceiling to 14 feet and flooded the space with light; He also remodeled the kitchen and dining room
The previous photo shows the original entrance to the house. In the new entrance, frosted glass doors and new windows from Bonelli Doors + Windows provide a light and bright entrance to the home.
He also removed the wall above the stairs leading from the front door, creating a fluid feel to the main entrance. “Now it’s a lovely driveway with a view of the hill,” says Lochte.
What Is A Bi Level House?
The remodeled kitchen has vaulted ceilings and a double island. The cabinets are from Kinross Woodworking, the custom stools are from Morning Works, and the swirl pendants are from LZF.

Another big change on the upper level is the installation of large sliding doors between the living room and the outdoor patio. Lochte increased the size of the terrace and combined it with the interior space, making it light.
The husband also requested a roof terrace above the master bedroom. “It was my contribution,” he says with a smile. “We don’t have many views because we’re in a canyon, but you can see the mountains and Mount Tam from here.
Remodeling A Split Level House (part 2/2)
It required advanced engineering to run a ladder from the patio to the rooftop deck, but the couple said it was worth it considering how often they use the perch to stargaze or share sunset drinks with friends.

The lower level, which was mostly an open playroom, suffered from leaks and required reconfiguration. “It was an ambitious wish list,” says his wife. “We needed a real mud room, a gym and another bathroom. Steve is back with a great layout. “
The lower level includes a private gym that is cleverly hidden by sliding doors. When the gym is open, it gets natural light and overlooks the side yard. When the doors are closed, the gym is hidden from both the front entry and the family room.
Adding Curb Appeal To Split Level Ideas
Construction led by Tom Wharton of TJ Built Construction fixed the leak. “We used her to make the Hawk,” Lochte says. The room is under the terrace, so Lochte added a system of floating bags to facilitate future roofing.

From the repair of the holey terrace to the complete renovation of the project, from the first meeting to occupancy, it took almost three years. Fortunately, construction – during which the family moved into a rental in a nearby town – lasted just over a year. “I liked the design of the house in Mill Valley, Marin, but I really didn’t think we could convince Steve to design our house,” says the wife. “We were so lucky that he was interested.
